Sad News from Tibet

Thursday, October 25, 2012

The self-immolations continue in Tibet but closer together now. It is now Thursday, October 25th, and 4 people have sacrificed themselves for the Tibetan cause since Saturday: 1 on Saturday, 1 Monday and 2 yesterday, Wednesday.

Every self-immolation is followed by a vigil, a painful experience to watch. Well over 50 people have died this way in the past 2-3 years, dozens since March 2011.

The world is slowly beginning to take notice of what is going on in Tibetan and why and to increase pressure on the Chinese government. It is a case of too little too late, however. Tibet has never received the help it expected and deserved. In order to preserve the nomadic way of life Tibet made a choice not to be in the UN many years ago, consequently it was unable to garner support when the Chinese invasion and assimilation began over 50 years ago.

We call on you to do everything you can to help the Tibetan people: sign petitions for organizations such as Avaaz or Canada Tibet; write to your Prime Minister or Foreign Affairs Minister requesting that an international delegation be sent to Tibet to investigate (as requested by the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala); involve your Church group and anything else you can think of to stop the human rights abuse going on in Tibet.
