Hi Carol: Thanks for your comments about your India trip. Yes, definitely a patriarchal society; boys are brought up entitled (I have something of this in An Indian Sojourn). What happened in Delhi is speeding up the changes though, it has mobillized women & some younger men.
Best

I have just spent 2 months in India, in the south and in Delhi and Rajasthan. I think my grey hair, traditional clothing and cautious behaviour shielded me from harassment by men; however I noticed that groups of young boys (10 to 14ish) took delight in being very cocky and disrespectful. A stern look and a grandmotherly wag of the finger usually put an end to it. But what struck me was that no one reprimanded these boys; they were left to think such disrespect to females was acceptable. This was during the rape trial, the 2 subsequent gang tapes, endless panels on TV discussing violence against women.

Nonintervention is a very typical behaviour in India, in small incidents like someone pushing ahead in a line to major events as when people on the street did nothing when the critically injured rape victim was thrown off the bus. People tend not to react if they are not directly involved. But disrespect for females can breed anger, hatred and violence. It seems to me that this needs to be acknowledged as everybody's business.

Thanks for the reminder Ellen. I am heading into two weeks of hibernation, to take some time-out-of-time, to reflect and restore.
